The clear waters of the Metolius River spring from the ground at the Head of the Metolius, east of the City of Sisters. The full grown river flows forty-one scenic miles from its headwater springs to Lake Billy Chinook, where it joins the Deschutes River and the Crooked River.
The river and
its tributaries provide important spawning habitat for redband trout, kokanee
salmon, and bull trout. On the whole, the Metolius River provides an outstanding example of a relatively unaltered stream system in the Deschutes Basin.
