Accomplishments

In the twelve years that we have worked in the Deschutes Basin, the DRC has accomplished more than any other streamflow restoration group in the Columbia River region.

Here are brief descriptions of our program accomplishments:

  • Water Conservation Program: restores streamflow by reducing the amount of water lost through canal seepage or by increasing on-farm efficiency. To date, this program has permanently restored 53 cubic feet per second (cfs) of streamflow to the Deschutes River and its tributaries.

  • Water Transfers Program: compensates water rights holders for permanently transferring part or all of their water right instream. Since 1999, this program has permanently restored over seven cubic feet per second (cfs) of streamflow to our local rivers and streams.

  • Water Leasing Program: gives land owners who do not wish to use their water right to irrigate their land the option to leave the water in the river for restoration. In 2008, we worked with almost 233 landowners to temporarily restore 92 cubic feet per second (cfs) of streamflow to the Deschutes River and its tributaries.

  • Habitat Restoration: the DRC has supported almost 50 habitat restoration projects across the Deschutes Basin. Almost 40 of these projects have been implemented by 2008.  DRC funded habitat restoration projects have restored almost 100 miles of stream, created 13 acres of new wetlands, and planted almost 150,000 native riparian plants.
